The Toyota Etios is a sedan developed by Toyota for India. The car was launched in December 2010, and it will soon be available in hatchback form, too, named Etios Liva.
Manufactured in Bangalore, India's IT Hub, Etios is the biggest such project in India by Toyota today, and is a direct assault on Suzuki's dominance in this market.
The Etios nameplate comes from the Greek "Ethos", meaning spirit, character, and ideas.

History

First presented in January 2010 at the New Delhi Auto Show, Toyota spent Rs 3200 crore to develop the Etios.Toyota also increased the number of Toyota dealers in India to 150.
At launch the base model was priced at 496,000 rupees ($10,870 USD).
The Etios is manufactured in Bangalore, Karnataka, and its automobile platform will also be used for future cars that will be sold in Brazil, another emerging market.

Launch.

The launch event of the Etios was held at Bangalore on December 1, 2010. A. R. Rahman, brand ambassador for the car, performed at the event. It was attended by Akio Toyoda.

Engine capacity and performance

Plans for the Toyota Etios will include body styles in sedan and hatchback variants. The hatchback will be powered by a 1.2 liter petrol DOHC 8 valve petrol engine while the sedan might be loaded with 1.5 liter DOHC, 4-valve, petrol-powered one. The 1.2L petrol engine is supposed to produce 60 bhp (45 kW; 61 PS) whereas the 1.5L petrol engine is believed to make 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp). Both engines will be equipped with dual camshaft and four valves per cylinder which ensure increased power and torque with better fuel efficiency.
However, Variable Valve Timing (VVTi) is missing; probably to keep the price low. But a powerful, perhaps too powerful, fuel efficient engine remains.
Currently, the Etios is only available as a sedan with the 2NR-FE DOHC 4 cyl. Dual VVT-i 16V gasoline engine with electric fuel injection, producing 90 PS (66kW, 88.5 bhp). This is mated to 5 speed manual gearbox. Plans for a hatchback variant, the Toyota Ethios Liva, are currently in process.
The Engine and Transmission are currently imported from Japan, but Toyota is setting up a Rs 500 crore plant to manufacture engines and transmissions in Bangalore from 2012.

Fuel

Initially, the car will be available in petrol variant only and diesel engine plans are not in the picture.[9]
