2008 Suzuki SX4 Sedan

2008 Suzuki SX4 Sedan

Replacing the suzuki carry pictures a car that it’s hard not to warm to. We’ve certainly been seduced by the suzuki carry reviews. It’s a little fun. Let’s just say that Suzuki could be credited as forerunners of today’s lifestyle 4×4s. With hindsight, however, they just seem irredeemably naff. Undaunted by the spare wheel carrier mounted on the suzuki carry pictures be minimised as there isn’t any other suitable surface.
A negative aspect of the suzuki carry ebay a far more capable in the suzuki carry truck over undulations in the suzuki carry pictures above the suzuki carry vans, the suzuki carry pictures of standard ESP across the rear seats also provide plenty of room for only the suzuki carry pictures. It leaves a couple more from other car makers. This market is one of our two complaints about the 2008 Suzuki SX4 Sedan.

2011 Suzuki SX4 Crossover has released an updated version of its Suzuki SX4 compact crossover vehicle in USA, addressing a number of concerns raised by customers and media.
New models are now equipped with stability manipulate (ESP) as normative, a continuously unsettled (CVT) autoloading sending is now offered and fuel use has been low, thanks to an all-new 2.0-litre petrol engine 2011 Suzuki SX4 Crossover.
“2011 Suzuki SX4 Elector set a new vision for shrimpy crossover vehicles when it launched and the updated variant continues to machine Suzuki as a large player in the localised industry,” said Suzuki USA Solon Handler Tony Devers.
“The update guarantees the new 2011 Suzuki SX4 give tender small-car customers a value-packed pick combine show, efficiency and Suzuki’s unreal reliability.”
The new engines outturn 112kW/190Nm and provide use has been low to 7.3 litres per 100 km for the 2WD exercise and 7.6L/100 for the CVT 2WD models, improving efficiency by 11 and 16 per centime respectively.
Suzuki SX4 Crossover Devers claimed that the Suzuki SX4 is one of the human performing and fuel-efficient petite cars obtainable today: “Customers acquire e’er enjoyed the state of the Suzuki SX4; now they can do it without paying an stone at the petrol pump. Our aim is to be among the assemblage leaders, and Suzuki SX4 much than delivers on the powertrain face.”
As symptomless as improvements in area and efficiency, the Suzuki SX4 comes in for several limited styling updates, though only eagled-eyed car spotters give observe the conflict (new entangle grate, distinct wheels). The domestic has also been refreshed. Easy in two-wheel push litter and reproduce, there is also a 4WD writing of the 2011 Suzuki SX4 Elector incubate. Fulfil adjusted for our get journeying of the new models.

The 2011 Lexus RX 450h defines design, engineering and luxury innovation in the hybrid luxury crossover segment. As Lexus’ best-selling hybrid model, the 2011 Lexus RX 450h smoothly moves into 2011 with several new exterior colors after the second generation was introduced in 2010.The 2011 Lexus RX 450h offers several new exterior colors to enhance its stylish exterior design. Satin Cashmere Mica replaces Golden Almond Metallic. Black Opal Mica and Stargazer Black have been added to the palette, while Aurora White Pearl, Truffle Mica and Black Sapphire Pearl are discontinued.
 Hybrid Powertrain
The 2011 Lexus RX 450h’s Lexus Hybrid Drive features a 3.5-liter V6 Atkinson-cycle engine, electric motors, a small and light power-control unit and other fuel-saving innovations. It offers up performance similar to V8s, 295 total system horsepower and better combined fuel economy than the average four-cylinder mid-size sedan. The Front Wheel Drive (FWD) model has EPA-estimated 32 mpg city and 28 mpg highway (30 mpg combined) fuel economy ratings, while the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model has estimates of 30 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, 29 mpg combined.
As a full hybrid, the 2011 Lexus RX 450h can operate in electric-only or gas-engine-only modes as well as a mode that combines the power of both. Extended electric-mode operation during low-speed or stop-and-go driving conditions helps reduce fuel consumption. Under certain circumstances, a driver-selectable EV mode can allow the vehicle to be driven short distances using only the electric motors. The 2011 Lexus RX 450h achieves Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) certification in California (Tier 2-Bin 3 in other states).
With the Atkinson cycle, the gasoline engine’s intake valves are closed late to delay beginning of compression, resulting in a higher expansion ratio. That reduces intake and exhaust energy losses for more efficient combustion and improved fuel economy. The gas engine alone produces 245 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 234 lb.-ft. torque at 4,800 rpm. The Atkinson cycle also reduces exhaust temperature.
A cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system reduces it further still, helping economy by eliminating the fuel enrichment otherwise needed to help prevent catalyst overheating under high loads.
A compact 288V DC Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack fits neatly under the rear seat. A boost converter efficiently raises voltage to 650V DC, and an inverter changes this to 650V AC for the front-mounted 123-kW electric motor-generator. The boost converter and inverter are enclosed in the power-control unit, which also houses the condenser.
The 2011 Lexus RX 450h FWD model’s hybrid powertrain employs two motor-generators: MG1, the engine-driven generator, is a starter and can charge the battery pack or power other electric motors as needed; MG2 is the front-drive motor. Power from the gas engine and MG2 is distributed to the drive wheels via a planetary gear-type continuously variable transmission. MG1 controls the output speed of the transaxle through the planetary gear set, without clutches or a viscous coupling. MG2 delivers torque over a wide range for better response and smooth performance. When the 2011 Lexus RX 450h is coasting or braking, the electric motors function as generators, capturing energy that would normally be lost as heat through the brakes and transforming it into electricity to recharge the batteries.
2011 Lexus RX 450h AWD adds a third, rear-mounted motor-generator (MGR) to drive the rear wheels, eliminating the need for power-transfer gearing or a driveshaft from the front. The hybrid system electronically varies front and rear torque distribution depending on traction conditions. A two-step flywheel damper absorbs small torque fluctuations and also the minor vibration produced when the gasoline engine starts and stops. A SNOW mode slows accelerator-pedal response to help reduce the possibility of wheel spin.
Multi-Mode, a feature adapted to the vehicle’s electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, allows the driver to control engine braking for enhanced maneuverability on rough or winding roads. The AI-SHIFT feature selects and holds the optimal range when driving downhill or on inclines, providing a smoother driving experience.
The power-steering pump, water pump and air-conditioning compressor are driven electrically rather than by the engine, reducing parasitic losses.
To enhance fuel economy, an exhaust heat-recovery system circulates engine coolant through a unit installed in the exhaust pipe behind the catalytic converter. This feature reduces engine warm-up time, allowing it to stop earlier, more often, and for longer periods, improving both fuel economy and emissions.
All-Wheel Drive
The 2011 Lexus RX 450h AWD uses a separate rear electric motor-generator to provide power to the rear wheels when road conditions or throttle response dictates. When accelerating, or starting off on a low-grip surface, torque is quickly provided to all four wheels. At steady speeds, torque is sent only to the front wheels, enhancing fuel efficiency. For handling agility and control, the AWD system increases rear-wheel torque when the vehicle’s front tires start to lose traction and decreases rear-wheel torque when the vehicle’s rear tires start to lose traction.
 Chassis/Body/Suspension/ Brakes/Tires
Lexus engineers provided the RX with an engaging driving experience, and a quiet and smooth ride. A key factor in the RX models’ handling agility is the uniquely designed double-wishbone rear suspension. Another key benefit of the rear suspension is that the packaging yields greater cargo area room. The front suspension geometry was optimized with a thick stabilizer bar. Inversely wound front coil springs compress in opposite directions, preventing the negative effects of suspension compression on steering.
The standard electric power steering system contributes to agility and better steering feel while eliminating the parasitic losses of a hydraulic steering pump. Eliminating hydraulic oil also provides an environmental benefit and reduces maintenance. When the driving conditions involve little steering input, energy consumption is reduced, improving fuel economy by nearly three percent. Steering assist is automatically adjusted in response to vehicle speed, with greater assist at low speeds and greater feel at higher speeds. In addition, maneuverability in the RX is easy with its 40 foot turning circle curb-to-curb.
Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) handling technology is standard on the 2011 Lexus RX 450h. VDIM system anticipates loss of vehicle control in virtually any direction and governs all of the vehicle’s dynamic handling systems – the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) – with the electronic throttle control system. The system employs them collectively and seamlessly to help make corrections while allowing higher dynamic capability.
The system’s enhanced VSC function adds steering assist torque to help aid handling on a split-friction surface. The VDIM system also provides a limited slip differential effect. The TRAC and VSC functions can also be switched off, for example, when the driver needs to free the vehicle when stuck in mud or snow.
The RX stops with the help of two-piston front caliper brakes and brake feel is enhanced by optimizing pads, pedal ratio and booster output characteristics. On the 2011 Lexus RX 450h, Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB2) work closely with VDIM, translating brake pedal stroke speed and pressure to generate the precise amount of hydraulic pressure needed.
Standard Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) uses brake pressure to help prevent the vehicle from moving backward when starting out on an incline. This system does not wait to detect rollback, however. It can be controlled by the driver and works in both forward and reverse. While the vehicle is stopped and the brake pedal is depressed, pushing it further activates the feature. Brake pressure is then maintained for approximately two seconds after the brake pedal is released and the driver switches to the accelerator pedal.
Standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, which were designed to appear as if carved from a single block, have 235/60R18 tires. Optional 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 235/55R19 tires are available with a hybrid-exclusive design.
Safety/Security
The 2011 Lexus RX 450h features Intelligent Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) for high beams of HID headlamp equipped models, and for the low beams of the LED equipped models. When entering a corner, AFS estimates where the vehicle will be in three seconds, based on the vehicle speed and the angle of the tires, and adjusts the lateral aim of the headlamps. AFS can be switched off by the driver if desired and includes an auto-leveling function.
Also available is an automatic high beam system which uses a camera mounted on the inner rear view mirror to switch between high and low beams in response to oncoming vehicles and those traveling in front, or when other ambient sources are detected, helping reduce driver inconvenience.
The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a pre-set following distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. The radar sensor can detect certain obstacles in front of the car, and a PCS computer with vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw-rate inputs helps to determine whether a collision is highly possible. In such a situation, PCS preemptively retracts front seat belts and pre-initializes BA so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal.
A high-strength cabin design and comprehensive Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) are designed to help provide a high level of crash-energy management. Approximately 42 percent of the entire structure uses high tensile strength sheet steel. The structure was engineered to help provide collision compatibility with vehicles of varying heights and weights.
The 2011 Lexus RX 450h is equipped with a segment-leading 10 standardairbags, including side curtain airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, rear side airbags (for the outboard seating positions) and knee airbags for the driver and the front passenger. A roll sensor signals the side curtain airbags to inflate if a predetermined threshold of vehicle tip-up is detected.
The front-passenger airbag is a dual stage, twin-chamber design that, when deployed, helps provide optimal protection. Active front headrests help reduce the severity of a whiplash injury in the event of certain types of lower speed rear collisions.
Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
Lexus luxury begins with how the customer first interacts with his or her vehicle. All RX models are equipped with the SmartAccess keyless entry with push-button start. As the driver approaches the vehicle, interior and exterior courtesy lamps illuminate. Opening the door, the instrument panel lighting gradually fades in. When the hybrid system is started, the instrument gauge needles and markings illuminate, followed by the multi-information display. After the driver exits the vehicle, the lights fade out at different intervals.
2011 Lexus RX 450h is equipped with a power tilt and telescopic steering column. To ease entry and exit, the seat automatically slides up to two inches rearward and the steering wheel tilts upward and slides forward when the hybrid system is switched off. Upon pushing the “ON” switch, the seat and steering wheel return to positions pre-set by the driver using the three-position memory system.
The standard 10-way power front seats are shaped to accommodate arm movement when operating the available Remote Touch, while also holding the occupants in place. Both the driver and passenger seats also feature power lumbar adjustment. Also available on the RX is a ventilation function for the front seats to help improve comfort on hot and humid days. The shape and texture of the armrests and switches offer an ideal combination of tactile feel and functionality.
The leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel features integrated audio controls and a unique cross-section that is designed to provide a more natural grip than a conventional round-section wheel. An optional leather and wood trimmed wheel is also available.
Three seat materials include standard fabric, optional smooth leather or even softer semi-aniline leather. In addition to light gray and black, Parchment is available as an interior color. The 2011 Lexus RX 450h also exclusively offers a black and light gray interior with striking black accents. Standard wood trim comes in Brown Walnut matched to Parchment, or Espresso Bird’s-eye Maple matched to gray and black.
The center console box provides more than 0.75 cu. ft. of storage capacity, enough space to comfortably store CDs/DVDs or the vehicle’s owner’s manual. The three-part (40/20/40) rear seats can slide fore and aft, recline, and fold down using the one-touch levers mounted in the luggage compartment. Compact rear-seat headrests help improve the driver’s visibility. The double-wishbone rear suspension, due to its compact packaging, yields a larger luggage compartment; the width between the suspension towers is increased by nearly six inches.
The quiet climate-control system offers quick cooling and warming. A high-efficiency compressor detects refrigerant flow in order to optimize engine control and fuel economy. An available smog sensor is designed to detect harmful particles (CO, HC, NOx) in other vehicles’ exhaust emissions and automatically switch between fresh air and recirculation modes. An electric compressor on the 2011 Lexus RX 450h includes a humidity sensor to help optimize air-conditioner operation, helping to enhance fuel economy.
The RX continues the tradition of offering the Lexus Premium Audio system as standard equipment, in this case a powerful nine-speaker system with a six-disc changer. Creative placement and angling of the speakers perfectly cross-channels sound to the occupant on the opposite side of the vehicle to transform the cabin into a clear, crisp acoustic environment. Bluetooth® hands free phone capability is also standard.
RX models can accommodate a variety of music sources, providing available auxiliary and USB inputs, Bluetooth Audio wireless connectivity and a standard integrated XM Radio receiver (complimentary 90-day trial subscription). When an iPod® is attached via the USB port, information such as names for the artist, track and album is displayed on the available navigation or audio screen, while the iPod can be controlled through the audio system. The large center console storage box easily accommodates a variety of electronic devices while keeping wires out of sight.
Luxury Options
An available 12-speaker system audio system comes with the optional navigation or rear seat entertainment systems and includes two-rear-door tweeters and a compact, L-shaped subwoofer in the rear-luggage compartment.
The optional 15-speaker Mark Levinson® Surround Sound system allows listeners to enjoy 7.1-channel surround sound. The Mark Levinson system, a Lexus exclusive, features a center channel coaxial speaker, metal-cone midrange speakers, tweeters and a 100-watt amplified subwoofer. A 2.5-inch speaker built into each D-pillar provides the right and left surround-sound channels. The diffusion of sound provides each occupant the same level of audio quality.
The available Hard Disc Drive (HDD) navigation system eliminates the need for DVD map discs and offers a unique voice recognition system, which can work using casual-language inputs on certain functions. An optional rear-seat entertainment system includes two high-definition seven-inch screens, one on each of the front seatbacks. Each screen can display video from separate sources. A remote control allows independent control of each screen. Rear-seat occupants can also choose to listen to audio through the wireless headphones instead of vehicle speakers.
The available wide-view side and backup cameras help provide the driver with a wider range of visibility. The driver can check hard-to-view areas by simply pressing the camera-select button on the steering wheel or, when in reverse, viewing the camera images on the navigation screen. An optional back-up camera displays images on the eight-inch navigation screen; systems without navigation have a 2.4-inch display in the rear-view mirror.
2011 Lexus RX 450h also offers a telematics system, Lexus Enform® with Safety Connect®, available by subscription. Complimentary one-year trial subscriptions are included on all purchases of new Lexus vehicles equipped with these features. Safety Connect is standard on all vehicles while Lexus Enform with Safety Connect is on all vehicles equipped with the optional Navigation system. The Lexus Enform and the Safety Connect response centers operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—every day of the year.
Lexus Enform vehicles are factory ready for subscriptions to a variety of innovative XM services including XM NavTraffic®, XM NavWeather™ and XM Sports and Stocks services. XM services require separate XM subscriptions. The XM Sports and Stocks service is included with an XM radio subscription. All XM services offer complimentary 90-day trial subscriptions.
Exterior Design
The Lexus RX models blend a dynamic version of L-finesse design to create a sleek profile that is accentuated by broad “shoulders” for an athletic yet elegant presence. Bright finish side-window moldings follow a subtly concaved line across the A– and C– pillars, extending at the front and rear ends.
The Lexus design cue of placing the grille lower than the headlights, along with sharper headlight graphics, yields a strong frontal expression. The 2011 Lexus RX 450h offers standard halogen and optional HID and LED headlights. The 2011 Lexus RX 450h’s unique grille features a finer pitch than on the RX 350, creating a fluid-like surface, accentuated by its silver color.
Pronounced front fenders flow into the doors, and integrated rear fender flares neatly sweep around to pull together the taut rear corners of the vehicle. The lower body emphasizes the standard 18-inch wheels. Passenger doors extend below the entry sill, helping keep out dirt and moisture.
Several exclusive design features, including the grille and front bumper, distinguish the 2011 Lexus RX 450h hybrid from the RX 350. Exclusive optional LED headlights offer a more distinctive appearance as well as longer life and lower energy consumption. Lexus hybrid blue is used for the front and rear emblems, hybrid logos, rear combination lights, and headlights.
A distinctive feature of the door handles is that the surface subtly twists outward from the front to the rear to give a comfortable grip. The side mirrors feature integrated LED turn signal lamps.
The rear spoiler’s primary function is to help lower the vehicle’s Coefficient of drag (Cd), but it also conceals the rear wiper and houses the AM/FM radio antenna and high-mount stop lamp.
Interior Design
Based on Lexus L-finesse philosophy, the dramatically designed interior clearly separates the interior into two distinct zones – the “display zone” to provide information, and the “operation zone” for interaction with controls. The shoulder of the door trim comfortably envelops the occupants, the clear line of the trim beginning inside the cabin and tapering outward toward the exterior. The design imbues a feeling of a continuous line encircling the occupants and defining the controls and displays. Neatly sculpted metallic surfaces, especially on the asymmetrical center stack, showcase a bold contrast of shadow and light.
A high contrast white Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) is used for the multi-information display located next to the speedometer. Vibrant white characters are sharply displayed on a high-contrast black background for ease of use and a luxurious appearance. For the 2011 Lexus RX 450h, blue accented meters strengthen the hybrid image, and a hybrid system indicator replaces the tachometer to encourage driving in an economical manner.
In addition to an Eco Driving indicator light, RX models feature an Eco driving indicator zone that displays current fuel economy using a bar graph and alerts the driver when they are achieving low fuel efficiency.
Lexus employed extensive human-machine interface (HMI) studies to enhance occupants’ interaction with all controls. To help reduce driver distraction and effort, each HMI function in the RX wastes no movement. The available eight-inch navigation display (or seven-inch audio/HVAC display when navigation is not ordered) is placed at a higher, more distant position, providing a more natural visual angle.
Three innovations to come from the HMI studies include the multi-information switch on the steering wheel, the Remote Touch console-mounted navigation controller and the available Heads-Up Display. The multi-information switch allows the driver to access numerous function settings without taking hands off the steering wheel, and reduces the number of individual switches, contributing to a cleaner instrument panel. Vehicle settings can be customized according to personal preference, including personal door-lock preferences, interior/exterior light adjustments, driver’s seat easy exit, and window-closure settings.
The available navigation system can be controlled using either the Remote Touch device or by utilizing voice command. Remote Touch allows the user to operate the navigation system, climate, audio, phone controls and more. The screen menus are selected with the controller, eliminating the need to reach out and reducing eye movement.
The attribute that most distinguishes Lexus’ navigation controller from other devices in other luxury models is its “haptic”-feedback technology, which provides a tactile response to the hand. As the user operates the controller near a screen icon, the cursor is pulled to that icon with feedback from a servomotor in the device enabling the user to feel it “click” into place. The driver or passenger makes a selection by pressing the side enter button on either side, and the feedback servo is adjustable for sensitivity. The system then confirms the action with a subtle sound. Remote Touch integrates the functions of seven hard switches used with the previous touch screen, helping users to operate those functions with reduced effort and distraction.
The available Heads-Up Display (HUD) utilizes white readouts. High-intensity LEDs project high-contrast white figures onto the windshield, which are easier to read – and easier on the eyes – than the typical green-colored readouts. The HUD offers displays for speed, navigation, and audio. A wedge-shaped windshield interlayer for the HUD projection area eliminates the distracting printed grid pattern seen on some other vehicles equipped with HUDs.
Warranty
All new Lexus vehicles come with a 48-month/50,000-mile basic limited warranty with roadside assistance for 48-months/unlimited miles. Powertrain and restraint system coverage is provided for 72 months/70,000 miles. Corrosion perforation protection is covered for 72 months, regardless of mileage. The hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery-control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for eight years/100,000 miles.

One of the biggest decisions that you have to make in life is what car is right for you. We know that there are many other important things, but you have to realize that you are not only thinking about you but also your family. There are many factors that you have to take into consideration, but top car safety features has to be your number one priority when you have a family.
Our vehicles are getting more advanced every year, and the likes of Volvo and BMW are always looking to future technology. Volvo stuck out in our mind because of their new “Pedestrian Protection System” and the hassles that they have had in its development. Thankfully this safety feature is now working and is part of the S60.
If we were to go back a few years some of the new safety features in those days were considered to be optional, such as Airbags, ABS and Brake Assist. However, most 2011 model cars come with two or all of the above as standard. You might think why would an automaker not charge the consumer for these safety features; well they do in a roundabout way. Although you have to remember that the best way to sell a car is making it as safe as possible, because the cargo that a mother or father has in the rear seats is priceless.

To give you an idea of this, I recently rented a small car while on vacation and was surprised that it came with a rear-parking camera. Even now most cars have this down as optional, but it will not be too long before this will be standard. This could mean that Volvo’s “Pedestrian Protection System” could be fitted to all of its models in 3 to 5 years time.
Knowing what are the top car safety features to look out for is tough, but you can be certain that this will be a huge topic of conversation during the 2011 Geneva Motor Show next week.

The headline figure for this Hyundai ix35 will always be the price; £16,540 will buy this sharp suited, well-equipped and big, high riding car.
I won’t call it a 4×4 because the one I drove was front wheel drive only, and the four wheel drive option is nothing more than a fancy traction control system anyway.
What you need to know is that despite a price similar to that of a Renault Megane or a Ford Focus, this is far more substantial vehicle.
Quality feel
Firstly, the interior is friendly and homely in a way no dour premium German car could be. It’s neither immature or dull and everything you need to touch feels more expensive than you would expect. I don’t think many ix35’s will find themselves without the excellent satellite navigation or stereo upgrade either, although this is a cost extra.
The 1.7 diesel engine takes a while to warm up but delivers a big slug of low-down grunt when asked. Some diesels rumble pleasantly while others complain and grumble, and this ones a grumbler; getting a little rougher when pushed.
It doesn’t need or like to be revved and one thing I found telling was how often I was having to change gear to keep the engine in its narrow power band. An automatic would better suit the cars low down torque.
Commotion of the motion reasonably hushed
The engine noise falls away at cruising speed however and the general commotion of motion is reasonably hushed for a car at this price.
The ride and handling is nice, if a little on the firm side. While it never wallows uncomfortably round corners, it also never quite irons out the road how you’d like it too.
The steering can be inconsistent too – it can change weight at times and kicks back slightly over bumps. Yet the lack of polish from the steering never takes away from the crisp way the car tacks into and out of a series of bends.
7/10 and well worth a look
Overall the Hyundai ix35 is well worth a look.
The cabin is usefully roomy and it feels good enough to spend a lot of time in, while this 1.7 diesel model will give 48.7mpg though town and country.
It’s also a fairly ageless car; it’s a sharp but simple looking vehicle that would genuinely appeal to both older and younger buyers.
Established, premium brands have to work hard to remain better than cars like this – but they do, just. 7/10.
Many thanks to Wight Motors in Sandown.

When Suzuki released the QuadSport LT-Z400 for the 2003 model year, the face of sport riding was changed forever. It was the equivalent of blowing on a campfire to get it hot. In response, both Yamaha and Honda kicked their development divisions into high gear. The resulting machines, the TRX450R and YFZ450, outperformed the Z400 on the track, but the 400 was still the superb trail machine.
The Z400 was not without problems, however. Early models had weak frames, an awkward chain adjuster, and a seat latch that wasn’t too secure. For 2005, the Z400 received some improvements; all the while, rumors started flying of an all-new Suzuki being built for the track. That machine is the Quad Racer LT-R450.
Prior to its release, the 2006 LT-R450 was the most anticipated race quad to date. Rumors and even released specs sheets showed that the new Quad Racer would be the closest to a race ready quad a Japanese company has ever produced. The Cannondale Moto 440 was actually 100-percent race ready, down to the kill switch and nerf bars. Those parts for the R450 are available through Suzuki’s aftermarket division, called Suzuki Genuine Accessories. The Cannondale Moto came with a price tag of $12,000, while Suzuki’s LT-R450 sells for $7300.
 LOW BOY
For the past few months we have bombarded you with all the details and specifications of the new R450. So this month we will spare you the minor details, touch on the major ones, and go right into what it is like to ride this exciting new quad. At first glance, the Quad Racer sits low to the ground. Overall it stands 42.7 inches tall, has a seat height of 30.7 inches, and less than four inches of ground clearance. Those readings are lower than both Honda’s (43.3"/32.8"/4.4") and Yamaha’s (42.9"/31.9"/4.4") numbers. The number one factor contributing to the LT-R450’s lower stance is its low profile, 18-inch rear Dunlop tires. The YFZ450 and TRX450R both come stock with 20-inch tires in the rear. Sitting on the LT-R450, it feels very comfortable. The controls are all well placed and feel solid, although we did have to immediately raise the shift lever before beginning our test ride. To do this, we had to remove and not re-use the countershaft sprocket cover. With the shift lever raised, it would hit the sprocket cover when up-shifting. The aftermarket will fix that mistake in no time.

START UP
The fuel-injected, 450cc, liquid-cooled motor fires up instantly at a push of a button, as long as the clutch is pulled in. There is no backup kick-starter; however, Yoshimura R&D has an aftermarket unit available for about $100.
On the left side of the handlebars sits what Suzuki calls a fuel enrichment lever. It looks like a choke lever, and acts like a choke lever. We didn’t find it useful or necessary to get the machine running. Fuel injection gives the LT instant throttle response. Not that the YFZ or TRX lag in this department; the LT is just exceptionally crisp at the crack of the throttle. The center-mounted muffler helps keep weight centralized as well as bringing noise levels down to suitable levels.  Our initial test ride was on a poorly groomed track in SoCal so it was the perfect opportunity to see how the new Suzuki works in all conditions.

POWER
With a push of the light thumb throttle, the LT-R450’s power comes on very smoothly. It revs quickly with very little vibration. Unlike with the Honda or Yamaha 450s, the engine doesn’t have a noticeable burst of power down low.
This engine likes to be revved and run at higher rpm. At the bottom, acceleration is not arm-jerking hard but is still sportscar fast. After a few laps we learned to keep the revs up, or we were forced to downshift at inopportune times. The five-speed transmission is easy to use and the gear spacing is correct for track riding. A 14/36 gearing ratio and eighteen-inch rear wheels keeps the stock top speed reading under 70 mph. When we were able to run the LT-R with the airbox lid and the spark arrester/quiet core removed, the need to downshift lessened. Compared to the Honda or Yamaha, the LT feels like it has slightly less bottom-end torque but just as much peak horsepower.

HANDLING
It’s not hard to see why this quad corners better than any other quad on the market. In stock trim, it is 49 inches wide. That’s as wide as a BRP DS650 and nearly three inches wider than the Honda and Yamaha 450s. Plus, the Dunlop tires like to slide. If you like to do doughnuts or fishtail down gravel roads, then this is your quad.
If you are looking for a quad to buy for Motocross racing, then this is also the machine to look at. Right off the showroom floor this thing could be raced competitively with only safety modifications. The suspension is completely adjustable front and rear and provides at least ten inches of travel at each end. We found the front shocks to be a bit harsh initially, like the Honda. They were very forgiving in the whoops, but their stiff nature caused the machine’s front end to slide in the turns. Steering is very light, almost too light. If you plan on racing this machine or riding the trails hard, a steering damper is definitely in order. Ergonomically, the machine was built spot-on. The seat to footpeg to handlebar relationship is nearly perfect. None of our test riders even complained about the handlebar bend. That’s a first! However, we do suggest purchasing a softer set of grips while you are at the dealer. The spade-shaped seat was comfortable while still remaining sleek and racey.

VISUAL EFFECTS
Suzuki styled the LT-R450 with racing in mind as much as Yamaha did with their 450. The headlight is removable with only one bolt. We didn’t get to test the headlight yet, so we are not sure how good of a night-rider the new Zuke will be. The front fenders are small and streamlined but still do an adequate job keeping mud from hitting the operator while cornering. The rear fenders and heel guards are a bit bulky and could use some trimming. Also, out back, we had one test rider complain about the bent-up, rear grab bar hitting his bum. It should aim straight out and be as small as possible. You can bet the grab bars on the race teams’ LT-R450s are not the stock shape.
With a 2.5-gallon fuel tank, you won’t be winning any endurance races in stock trim. The fuel injection system does not seem to be easy on the mileage, either. We were constantly topping off the tank so we didn’t run low.

CONCLUSION

For motocross racing the Suzuki LT-R450 will be a low-cost alternative to modifying a Honda or Yamaha. At $7300 ready to go, the $3000 you will save on wider A-arms, shocks and an axle will buy a lot of entry fees and race gas. Sure, the experienced racer will always look into aftermarket components to keep the edge over the competition, and we would too. If we were to race the new Suzuki, we would use up the stock tires then invest in a set of ITP Holeshots or Maxxis Razr, then change the shocks with our next paycheck. You can bet companies like Elka, Works, Progressive and Fox will be building stock replacement shocks for this machine in no time, with even more travel. For the dunes, this machine will be stable and a fun quad to slide around with a set of paddles or with twenty-inch radials, of course. Is Suzuki building the best high performance race ready quad on the market today? Actually, they are building the only one. It will only be a matter of time before Honda and Yamaha come out with wider versions of their 450s. And you can bet they will be very competitive with the Suzuki. If you can’t wait that long, head to your Suzuki dealer.
